Born in Nagoya in 1970, Hiroshi Sugito is a Japanese painter who graduated from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 1993. The source also describes him as a former student of Yoshitomo Nara. He is a professor of oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts.
His practice is associated with nihonga, but his paintings do not favour this tradition’s conventional landscape imagery; instead, they bring together abstract and recognisable elements. According to the source, the works often evoke dreams, altered realities and childhood fantasies. Some of their imagery plays on “kawaii”, the register of cuteness, while combining it with a sense of strangeness or unsettling dislocation.
In 1997, Sugito takes part with Nara in the group exhibition “Over the Rainbow”. The solo exhibitions mentioned include “Needle and Thread” at Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo in 2011, followed by “the orange tree” at Kenji Taki Gallery in Nagoya in 2012. An untitled work, oil on canvas, 20 × 25.5 cm, is noted as signed and dated 1996 on the reverse; its provenance is given as the Marisa Perret-Rezzonico collection.
This profile brings together identity references for Hiroshi Sugito and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
