SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
The German painter Hugo Mühlig, born in Dresden and deceased in Düsseldorf, is described by the source as Impressionist, which notes landscapes and rural scenes in his paintings. The son of landscape painter Meno Mühlig and nephew of animal painter Bernhard Mühlig, he first learned painting from his father, then studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in Viktor Paul Mohn’s class. He settled in Düsseldorf in 1881 and continued working as an independent artist, without belonging to an official academy.
To find subjects, he regularly travelled to Willingshausen, where he became a member of the painters’ colony, as well as to Röllshausen. His subjects include landscapes, harvesting activities, winter hunting scenes and figures walking in the light. His small- or medium-format paintings are described as attentive to detail.
Among the documented works is «In der Heuernte», an oil on cardboard measuring 19 × 29 cm, listed in the monograph by Baeumerth and Körs, page 231, no. 370. A few works are noted in museum collections, including the Museum Kunstpalast and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum. The monograph by Angelika Baeumerth and Wilhelm Körs, *Hugo Mühlig (1854–1929). Leben und Werk*, was published in Düsseldorf in 1997.
