Hugo Darnaut

Born : 1851Died : 1937Documented citizenships : Austria

Austrian painter Hugo Darnaut, born in Dessau in 1851 and died in Vienna in 1937, also known as Darnaut-Fix, trained across several artistic centres in Central Europe. After spending his youth in Graz, he learned theatrical scenery painting in Vienna under Heinrich Burghart, then studied at the city’s Academy of Fine Arts in 1871 and 1872, in Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels’s studio. A scholarship then took him to Düsseldorf, where he met Andreas Achenbach, Robert Meyerheim and Johannes Wortmann. In the 1890s, he supplemented his training with a year of classes under Gustav Schönleber in Karlsruhe.

Established in Vienna’s artistic milieu, he became a member of the Künstlerhaus in 1877. After Emil Jakob Schindler’s death, he rented Plankenberg Castle in Sieghartskirchen, where Schindler had painted landscapes and founded a school. Darnaut took part in exhibitions in Berlin, Paris and Venice. In 1900, he worked with Erwin Pendl at the Austrian pavilion at the World’s Fair. He settled in Maria Anzbach in 1912, then chaired an artists’ association in Vienna from 1913 to 1918. In 1930, he became a citizen of Vienna and was appointed an honorary member of the Künstlerhaus and the Vienna University of Technology.
