Horst Egon Kalinowski

Born : 1924Died : 2013Documented citizenships : Germany

Horst Egon Kalinowski (1924–2013), born in Düsseldorf, developed a practice spanning painting and sculpture. After a stay in Italy, he attended Jean Dewasne and Edgard Pillet’s abstract art studio in Paris from 1950 to 1952. He participated in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and held solo exhibitions at the Arnaud, Creuze and Daniel Cordier galleries. Until 1956 his nonfigurative paintings showed the influence of Purism. He then turned towards collage and assemblage using varied materials, often brown and suggestive of leather, before making objects from real leather from 1980. He received the Carl Einstein Prize in 1966 and began teaching at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts in 1968.
