André Planson

Born : 1898Died : 1981Documented citizenships : France

André Planson is one of the Peintres de la réalité poétique, a group he formed with Roland Oudot, Maurice Brianchon, Christian Caillard, Roger Limouse and Raymond Legueult. After receiving guidance from Paul Meslé, a local painter, he attended courses at the Académie Ranson in Paris from 1917 to 1919. He exhibited at the Salon des indépendants in 1923, then received the Blumenthal Prize in 1933. His exhibition history subsequently includes the Venice Biennale in 1938 and the São Paulo Biennial in 1949. Appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1949, he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts in 1960.

A retrospective devoted to him was held at the Musée Rath in Geneva in 1952; an exhibition about him was also organised at the Musée Galliéra in Paris in 1960. His works include Orphée, executed in 1954–1955 for the dining hall of the Lycée Gustave-Monod in Enghien-les-Bains. La vue et les éléments, dated 1961, is located on the Cassan buildings of the Pierre-et-Marie-Curie campus of Sorbonne Université. Several works are held in public collections: Été, souvenir d’Avignon at the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg, and Le village de Biercy at the Musée des beaux-arts de Nantes. The Musée des beaux-arts de Brest holds Le printemps à Beuzec, an oil on canvas from 1955 measuring 54.5 × 81 cm.

Planson’s work is the subject of a monograph by Pierre Mac Orlan, published in 1954 in the Peintres et Sculpteurs d’hier et d’aujourd’hui series. Raymond Charmet also devoted Planson, la nature to him; it was published in 1970.
