Luigi Steffani

Born : 1827Died : 1898

Luigi Steffani went to Milan in 1844 and studied there without attending an academy. Travel subsequently became important to his development and repertoire. Following his debut at the Brera exhibition in 1857, he established his home in Milan and associated with artists including the Induno, Mosè Bianchi and Pompeo Mariani. Water was a recurring subject in his painting, from seascapes and lagoons to harbours and changing tides. Mist and rural scenes broadened this engagement with landscape. His submissions to exhibitions in Parma, Turin, Rome and Bologna demonstrate the circulation of his work across Italian venues. Paintings held in Milan and Turin bear witness to his attention to shorelines as well as cultivated land.

This profile brings together identity references for Luigi Steffani and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
