Francis Picabia (1879–1953), born and deceased in Paris, moved through the avant-garde without remaining committed to a single doctrine. After Impressionist landscapes, he explored Cubism and abstraction. Participation in New York’s Armory Show in 1913 and exchanges with Marcel Duchamp connected him with international networks of modern art.
His machine images gave ironic form to human relationships and accompanied his involvement in Dada. He founded the journal 391 in 1917, later distancing himself from the movement. The Transparencies superimpose figures and historical references, while later paintings draw on sources including popular photographs. He also collaborated on the ballet Relâche and the film Entr’acte in 1924. These changes of visual language form a sustained investigation of artistic conventions and authority.
