Miroslav Šutej, a Croatian artist who lived from 1936 to 2005, explored the mechanisms of perception through painting, drawing and printmaking. After graduating from the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts in 1961, he developed compositions associated with Op Art. In the 1962 ink drawing The Sun Atom, tiny black and white units form larger circles, producing an impression of volume and movement across the flat surface.
MoMA holds Bombardment of the Optic Nerve, II, made in 1963 with tempera and pencil on a circular canvas approximately two metres in diameter. Ultra A, dated 1965, combines painting with a wooden relief. These works shift attention from the depicted subject towards the activity of looking, and then towards the material possibilities of the painted object.
This profile brings together identity references for Miroslav Šutej and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
