Louis Vivin
Born : 1861Died : 1936Documented citizenships : France
The self-taught painter Louis Vivin (1861–1936), born in Hadol in the Vosges and deceased in Paris, developed a body of work devoted primarily to urban landscapes. The son of a schoolteacher, he attended the technical secondary school in Épinal. From 1879, he worked in the postal administration and continued to paint in his spare time. He exhibited at the Salon des agents des Postes in 1889, then presented landscapes at the Salon artistique des PTT in 1904. His meeting with the art critic Wilhelm Uhde contributed to his recognition.
His subjects came in particular from the postcards he collected: Parisian monuments, Montmartre and the banks of the Seine appear regularly in his paintings. In these views, the geometrically rendered façades and monuments may be animated by small figures. The treatment of space does not seek an objective representation of the urban landscape.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds his painting “The Wedding”. An exhibition devoted to Vivin was held at the Kunstsalon Wolfsberg in Zurich from 18 June to 21 August 1982.
This profile brings together identity references for Louis Vivin and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
