Isaac Snowman developed a painting practice in which portraiture and scenes of Jewish life played important roles. After attending the City of London School, he entered the Royal Academy in 1890. In 1897 he helped establish the artistic association known as the “Maccabees” with Israel Zangwill and Herbert Bentwich, and travelled with his companions to Palestine. His career also took him to Algiers and Hampstead, then to Jerusalem, where he worked in a studio above the Damascus Gate. His subjects include women, interiors, worshippers and scholars. Die Orangenpflückerin depicts a young woman picking oranges, broadening the view of his work beyond its religious themes.
This profile brings together identity references for Isaac Snowman and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
