George Fischhof

Born : 1859Died : 1914

George Fischhof, generally known as Georg Fischhof (1859–1914), was an Austrian painter born in Vienna, where he also died. After studying architecture, he turned to painting under Friedrich Sturm at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and continued his training in Munich. Back in Vienna, he also practised decorative painting imitating historical tapestries.

His repertoire includes portraits, figures, landscapes and seascapes. Views of Dutch harbours, Italian shores and rural scenes crossed by paths or streams recur in his production. People and boats frequently animate these settings. Catalogues record his use of several pseudonyms, including Wagner and Ducat. This variety of signatures accompanies work that repeatedly addresses inhabited landscapes and activities along the coast, across both northern and southern European subjects.

This profile brings together identity references for George Fischhof and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
