Thomas Hudson was born in Devon in 1701 and died at Twickenham in 1779. Trained in London by Jonathan Richardson, whose daughter he married, he became a sought-after portrait painter among London society during the 1740s and 1750s. His sitters included the composer George Frideric Handel, whom he painted several times. An organized studio helped him meet the demand for portraits, with specialist assistants contributing to the depiction of clothing. This division of work offers insight into the collaborative production of eighteenth-century portraiture. Hudson also helped train the next generation: Joshua Reynolds and Joseph Wright of Derby were among his pupils. An art collector with close artistic friendships, he travelled through France and the Netherlands with William Hogarth and Francis Hayman in 1748, and visited Italy with Louis-François Roubiliac in 1752. His career reveals the connections between commissions, apprenticeship and artistic society in the England of his day.
