Friedrich Karl Gotsch

Documented citizenships : Germany

Friedrich Karl Gotsch (1900–1984) was a German painter whose artistic training developed between Kiel and Dresden. As a pupil of Hans Ralfs, he encountered Edvard Munch’s work before continuing his studies with Otto Hettner and then Oskar Kokoschka. This connection with Expressionist circles accompanied a practice that remained open to revisiting earlier works. The inscription on his 1966 painting Die Neusiedler identifies it as a new version of a work from 1951. This return to an earlier subject provides a concrete example of a process in which an image was not necessarily considered definitively complete. Training, experience with colour and the reworking of compositions therefore offer useful points of entry into his career.

This profile brings together identity references for Friedrich Karl Gotsch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
