The Italian painter Francesco Podesti, born in Ancona in 1800 and deceased in Rome in 1895, was associated with academic circles and took part in Italian artistic life in the first half of the nineteenth century. Trained in Rome under Gaspare Landi and Vincenzo Camuccini, he participated in the exhibitions that shaped the Italian art scene at the time.
His works include the Hall of the Immaculate Conception in the Vatican and historical compositions related to the Risorgimento; he also practised portraiture. His output comprises finished paintings, sketches and numerous preparatory drawings, bearing witness to the diversity of working forms in his œuvre. His works are held in Italian museums, including in Ancona.
A panel entitled The Bath, signed and dated 1884, is described as possibly being a study for the oil painting on canvas The Bathing Ladies; this relationship remains a hypothesis.
This profile brings together identity references for Francesco Podesti and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
