Almir Mavignier

Born : 1925Died : 2018Documented citizenships : Brazil

Almir Mavignier, also known as Almir da Silva Mavignier, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1925 and died in Hamburg in 2018. He is associated with Concrete Art and Op Art. Painting, point images, grid structures and graphic design mark a practice that developed between Brazil and Germany.

After completing secondary school in 1946, he studied painting with Árpád Szenes in Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, he became director and co-founder of the painting studio at the Centro Nacional de Psiquiatria Pedro II do Engenho de Dentro, a position he held until 1951. He produced his first abstract work in 1949, then presented his first solo exhibition in 1951 at the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo. From 1952, he devoted himself to Concrete Art painting.

From 1953 to 1958, Mavignier studied visual design at the Ulm School of Design, notably with Max Bill and Josef Albers. His first “point images” date from 1954; he created his first grid structures the following year. From 1956, he created Op Art images and, from 1957, also painted monochromes. From 1958, he collaborated with artists from the ZERO group. In 1959, he founded his studio in Ulm and worked as a freelance graphic designer. In 1960–1961, he co-organised and curated the exhibition “Neue Tendenzen” in Zagreb; in 1964, he participated in documenta III in Kassel.

Appointed professor of painting at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg in 1965, he taught there for twenty-five years. His work as a graphic designer includes more than 200 posters, designed primarily for art and cultural exhibitions. His public-space works include the outdoor sculpture “convex concave and convex”, installed in 1971 on Kirchenallee, at Hamburg Central Station.
