Born in Madrid in 1898 and died in Paris in 1972, Francisco Bores was a Spanish painter whose career unfolded between these two cities. In 1916, he entered the academy of Cecilio Pla, where he studied for three years, and during his training copied works by Velázquez, Goya and Titian at the Prado Museum. From 1922, he took part in official salons and contributed to various journals. In 1925, he settled in Montparnasse, Paris, where he presented his first solo exhibition at Galerie Percier in 1927.
In 1935, he signed a contract with Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, then director of Galerie Simon. After the outbreak of the Second World War, he settled in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1940, then returned to Paris the following year and took part in the exhibition Vingt jeunes peintres de tradition française (Twenty Young Painters of the French Tradition).
After the war, his solo exhibitions included, among others, presentations at Galerie de France and Galerie Apollo in Brussels in 1946, followed by one at Galerie Pierre in 1950. He then exhibited several times at Louis Carré, in 1954, 1956, 1957 and 1962, and at Pierre Berès in 1960. In 1961, he produced a series of lithographs intended to illustrate the complete works of Albert Camus, published by the Imprimerie nationale. He also exhibited at Galerie Villand et Galanis in 1964, 1966 and 1967.
After his death, retrospectives were organised in Paris in 1975, in Luxembourg and Madrid in 1976, at the Santander Museum in 1985, and then at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid in 1999. The public collections listed as holding his works include the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which holds 21 paintings, 150 drawings and 10 gouaches, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Kunsthaus in Zurich. In 2003, the Reina Sofía published a two-volume catalogue raisonné of his paintings, covering the periods 1917–1944 and 1945–1972.
