Ferdinand František Engelmüller

Born : 1867Died : 1924

Ferdinand Engelmüller (1867–1924) was a Czech painter and graphic artist whose work focused on landscape and architectural subjects. A pupil of Julius Mařák at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, he explored landscapes along the Elbe, working alongside Antonín Slavíček. His travels took him to Volhynia, Lake Garda and several Central European cities, and later to the artists’ colonies of Worpswede and Dachau. He founded his own painting school in 1897. With an affinity for Symbolism, he depicted secluded parks and architecture in a lyrical atmosphere. The Bohemian landscape also occupied an important place in a practice that included pastels, etchings and illustrations for tales featuring fantastic creatures.
