Peter Brüning

Peter Brüning was a German painter and sculptor associated with postwar Informel. He studied under Willi Baumeister in Stuttgart before spending time in Paris, where he met Hans Hartung. His paintings of the 1950s and early 1960s brought together gesture, rhythm and relationships between colour and ground. In a canvas held by the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, black brushstrokes and transparent colours allow the white ground to play an active part in creating spatial depth. His investigations also extended to cartographic signs: a tree symbol became a sculptural presence within the landscape. As a professor at the Düsseldorf Academy, Brüning participated in his region's artistic life. His work connected the energy of painterly gesture with questions about how space can be represented.
