Matt Mullican

Born : 1951Documented citizenships : United States

Matt Mullican, born in Santa Monica in 1951, investigates systems of knowledge and the relationships between perception, language and representation. The son of artists Lee Mullican and Luchita Hurtado, he graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 1974. Since the 1970s he has performed under hypnosis, during which an alter ego named “That Person” emerges. Drawings produced in these sessions are exhibited under this attribution. His activities also include teaching, notably at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg from 2009 to 2018. In 2017, For Worlds Between Five was installed on the façade of the Petit Palais in Paris during FIAC. A catalogue covering his photographs from 1971 to 2018 appeared in 2020.
