Leandro Bassano, also known as Leandro dal Ponte, was born in Bassano del Grappa in 1557 and died in Venice on 15 April 1622. Trained with his brothers in his father’s workshop, he worked there in Bassano from 1575, before practising independently around 1580. After marrying in 1587, he settled in Venice the following year; he nevertheless returned frequently to Bassano to look after the workshop.
His work encompasses religious painting and portraiture. One source describes his portraits as being executed in the style of Tintoretto; he devoted himself mainly to portraits and altarpieces, while his assistants took care of the rest of the production. In 1596, he was knighted in recognition of a portrait of Doge Marino Grimani.
Works held in public collections include The Concert, dated around 1590 and held at the Uffizi, The Weaver — also known as Penelope Unweaving Her Work —, dated 1575–1585 and held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes, and The Fish Market by the Sea, dated around 1578 and held at the Musée d’Angoulême. Religious works include Christ Dead with Angels, around 1580, at the Cleveland Museum of Art; Saint Hyacinth Walking on the Water of the Dnieper River, dated 1610, at San Zanipolo; and The Glory of Saint Augustine, an altarpiece for San Geremia dated 1619–1622. The Resurrection of Lazarus and Lucretia are held at the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia; The Wedding at Cana is in the Louvre and The Tower of Babel in the National Gallery in London. The Rijksmuseum also holds a Portrait of a Woman, probably identified as Morosina Morosini, wife of Marino Grimani.
