Arnold Schmidt

Born : 1959

Arnold Schmidt joined the House of Artists at Gugging in 1986 and developed a practice based on circular gestures. Repeated curves, layered or placed side by side, build both his figures and their intense colour. Torsos, limbs and faces emerge from the same vocabulary of forms through a rapid, intuitive way of working. Birds, bicycles and aeroplanes gradually join the human figures, which often appear alone or in groups of two or three. Some motifs approach abstraction, while larger canvases bring together several elements of his repertoire. His work at the Gugging studio provides continuity for this expressive exploration, in which the movement of the line shapes the appearance of people, creatures and objects.

This profile brings together identity references for Arnold Schmidt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
