Elisabeth Voigt was born in Leipzig in 1893 and died there in 1977. She worked in painting, woodcut and lithography. After studying in Leipzig and Berlin, she trained with Karl Hofer and Käthe Kollwitz. Her images combine an interest in the human figure with forceful graphic contrasts. The Wehrwolf woodcut series draws on Hermann Löns’s novel about violence during the Thirty Years’ War.
Voigt’s career crossed several political systems. Exhibited and honoured under National Socialism, she became a professor in Leipzig in 1946. Her teaching helped shape artists including Wolfgang Mattheuer and Werner Tübke. Subsequent controversies over formalism in East Germany complicated her position. Illustrations for Brecht’s Mother Courage returned to the subject of war with a pacifist perspective, giving this recurring historical theme a different political resonance.
This profile brings together identity references for Elisabeth Voigt and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
