Cornelis Saftleven came from a family of artists and developed a body of work spanning several areas of painting and drawing. His career took him from Rotterdam to Antwerp and Utrecht before he returned to Rotterdam in 1637. Peasant scenes, portraits, animals and biblical or mythological subjects coexist in his repertoire. This range appears in the Art Institute of Chicago’s holdings, including A Camel and A Witches’ Sabbath, which give space to both animal observation and fantastic imagery. At the Rijksmuseum, the Annunciation to the Shepherds and a satire on the trial of Johan van Oldenbarneveldt likewise demonstrate his varied subjects. The cattle market painted in 1659 connects animals with human activity and genre painting.
