The German painter and illustrator of British origin Edward Harrison Compton was born in Feldafing on 11 October 1881 and died on 6 March 1960. He was the second son of the painter Edward Theodore Compton, who was himself born in England.
His artistic training began with his father and continued in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. After completing his studies, he settled once again in Bavaria. Like his father, he found inspiration in the Alps and became a mountain painter, known in German as a “Bergmaler”.
He worked in both oil and watercolour, using these two techniques for his landscapes. These covered several regions: Germany, England, northern Italy and Sicily. His work also included illustrating several travel books published by A & C Black. His works have been exhibited in Munich and Berlin, as well as in England, at the Royal Academy in London and in Bradford.
