Stanisław Stückgold, also known as Stanislaus or Stanislas Stückgold, was a painter born in 1868 and died in 1933. Before devoting himself to painting, he studied at the Polytechnikum in Warsaw, then chemistry and philosophy in Zurich and at the Sorbonne in Paris; after his military service in the Russian army, he worked as an assistant in a state chemical laboratory in Berlin and then in Düsseldorf. Back in Warsaw, he managed a chemical factory, founded an independent technical office and filed patents relating to the textile industry and boiler heating systems. After the suppression of the revolution, he abandoned engineering and began studying art in Warsaw.
Having settled in Paris in October 1908, he became a pupil of Henri Matisse and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in March 1909. He then opened a painting school in Munich, which he ran until 1921; returning to Paris from 1923, he ran another there until 1926.
His work includes landscapes, still lifes and “Tierkreisbilder”, or zodiac paintings. His palette is described as luminous. His portraits include those of Martin Buber, Albert Einstein, Else Lasker-Schüler and Albert Steffen.
Stückgold exhibited at Hans Goltz’s in Munich in 1913 and 1917. In 1929, an exhibition in Berlin brought together fifty paintings and graphic works. After his death, André Salmon organised a retrospective of his work at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery.
