Alfréd Réth

Alfréd Réth (1884–1966) developed a career that moved from learning to paint towards exploring materials. In 1903 he joined the Nagybánya artists' colony and worked under Károly Ferenczy; he also studied in Florence before travelling to Paris in 1905. Still Life with a Fruit Dish (1912) and The Restaurant Hubin (1913), at the Centre Pompidou, belong to his early Paris years. He joined Abstraction-Création in 1931 and exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles after the war. Harmonie des Matières (1950), combining oil paint and glued gravel, offers a concrete example of his investigation of materials. Collage, using paper and later printed fabrics, accompanied a practice in which figuration reappeared in his final years.
