Jean Carzou (1907–2000) was the professional name of Karnik Zouloumian, who was born in Aleppo. After attending the French lycée in Cairo, a scholarship from the Armenian community enabled him to continue his education in Paris. His practice combined painting, drawing, engraving and lithography with illustration and stage decoration. Ruins and broken weapons were among his means of evoking the devastation of war. The stage offered another scale for his work: he designed sets for Les Indes galantes at the Paris Opera in 1952, followed by Giselle and Athalie. He also executed the decoration of the chapel at the Presentation convent in Manosque. Elected to the Académie des beaux-arts in 1977, he designed his own ceremonial academician’s sword.
