Joseph Höger, also known as Josef Höger, was born in Vienna in 1801 and died there in 1877. He studied at the city’s Academy of Fine Arts, became close to the Gauermann family and travelled in the Alps. Watercolour was a favoured medium for his landscapes, woodland scenes and urban views. From 1849 to 1851 he also taught at the Vienna Academy’s elementary school.
Eichhorn Castle at Evening, dated around 1838 by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, combines watercolour with an underlying graphite drawing. The buildings sit within a valley framed by hills. A small Landscape with a Ruined Castle in the Princely Collections of Liechtenstein likewise uses watercolour over pencil. These sheets demonstrate the complementary roles of drawing and colour in his observation of landscape.
This profile brings together identity references for Joseph Höger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
