Omar Onsi, born in Beirut in 1901 and deceased there in 1969, contributed to the development of modern painting in Lebanon. Trained by Khalil Saleeby, he continued studying in Paris in the late 1920s after a period in Jordan. His oils and watercolours depict landscapes, figures and local customs, with particular attention to the effects of light.
Landscape, made around 1935 and held by the Barjeel Art Foundation, is a small oil painting on panel. Mathaf’s collection also includes village views and People in the lane, a watercolour on paper. These everyday subjects belong to a conception of art connected with collective life. As a teacher and cofounder of artists’ associations, Onsi also helped establish an institutional framework for art in Lebanon.
This profile brings together identity references for Omar Onsi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
