Jaroslav Grus (1891–1983), born in Pardubice and deceased in Prague, worked as a painter, graphic artist, illustrator and printmaker. Landscape held a particular place in his artistic development. Impressionism and Post-Impressionism shaped his early work, while study trips to Germany and France between 1922 and 1925 widened his frame of reference. His encounter with Fauvism contributed to the formation of his own approach to landscape painting. This development places his work at the meeting point of several investigations into colour and the representation of the visible world. Illustration and printmaking complemented his painting, making the production of images in different forms an enduring feature of his artistic career.
