Jan Frans van Bredael, also known as the Elder, was a Flemish painter born in Antwerp in 1686 and died in 1750. The eldest son of the painter Alexander van Bredael and Cornelia Sporckmans, he trained under his father. In 1706, together with his cousin Jozef, he undertook to produce copies after Philips Wouwerman and Jan Brueghel the Elder for several years for the Antwerp art dealer Jacob de Witte; according to the source, he ultimately worked for this dealer for nine years.
He married Catharina de Rijck; the couple had two daughters and a son. According to the source, during Louis XV’s visit to Antwerp in 1746, the king went to his studio and acquired four small works.
His work spans several genres, including history painting and religious painting; he is particularly known for landscapes with genre scenes, battle and hunting scenes, and equestrian paintings. After initially copying mainly Wouwerman and Brueghel, van Bredael developed his own style without breaking with these models: he adopted motifs associated with Wouwerman in his equestrian compositions and battle scenes, while his landscapes remained closer to Jan Brueghel the Elder.
The attribution of works nevertheless calls for caution: several members of the extended van Bredael family worked in similar genres and styles, which can make it difficult to identify a specific artist. A river landscape with fishermen, entitled “Flusslandschaft mit Anglern”, is thus attributed to Jan Frans van Bredael in a sale notice that describes it as an oil on copper measuring 17 × 23 cm; the published provenance mentions a sale at Lempertz in Cologne on 14 May 2011, followed by a private collection in the Rhineland.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Frans van Bredael and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
