Holger Bunk, born in Essen in 1954, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Alfonso Hüppi. He developed a figurative painting practice that questions the conditions of images and the artist’s place in society. From 1992 to 2020, he taught painting and life drawing at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.
As early as 1977, he began cutting motifs from his pictures along their contours and placing the painted elements in real space. The image becomes an arrangement through which visitors can move. For his exhibition at Portikus in 1991, four large freestanding paintings formed a passage inhabited by figures. Drawings and pastels extend this investigation: human presence remains central, but meaning arises as much from spatial construction as from the subject depicted.
This profile brings together identity references for Holger Bunk and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
