The Polish painter Ludwig Gedlek, born in Kraków in 1847 and died in Vienna in 1904, devotes a significant part of his oeuvre to the horse: almost all of his paintings depict one. His genre scenes address, among other subjects, the lives of peasants and mounted soldiers, making these motifs the documented core of his production.
He studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków from 1861 to 1872, notably under Władysław Łuszczkiewicz. From 1873, he continues his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels and Carl Wurzinger; one record states that these studies continue until 1877. After his studies, he remains in Vienna while maintaining regular ties with Kraków.
Gedlek exhibits his works for the first time in 1863, at the exhibition of the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Kraków, and later takes part in exhibitions in Lviv, Warsaw and Dresden. Among the listed works is “Landschaft mit rastenden Husaren”, an oil on wood measuring 28.5 × 58 cm, signed “L Gedlek Wien”. Works by the artist are held at the National Museum in Warsaw and the Lviv Art Gallery.
