Johanna Schütz-Wolff (1896–1965) was a German artist whose career brought together textile design, graphic work and teaching. Following studies in Weimar, she trained in Munich with Fritz Ehmcke. In Halle she encountered the new direction of Burg Giebichenstein under the architect Paul Thiersch, who appointed her head of its textile class in 1920.
An exhibition of Franz Marc’s work seen in Berlin in 1916 made a strong impression. Before taking up her teaching position, she met Maria Marc and discussed translating the painter’s ideas into enamel and textiles. Works on paper from this period accompanied these investigations. The centenary retrospective “Textil und Grafik” subsequently brought these two aspects of her practice into relation, presenting their place within her wider artistic activity.
This profile brings together identity references for Johanna Schütz-Wolff and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
