Armando Barrios (1920–1999), born in Caracas, entered the city’s fine arts academy in 1932. His European stay, beginning in 1949, took him to Paris, where encountering abstraction changed his figurative painting. Geometry became a means of construction without permanently displacing the human figure, which later returned in highly stylised forms. Rhythm, drawing, colour and light contribute to this exploration. In 1952, Carlos Raúl Villanueva commissioned murals for the University City of Caracas, giving his visual language an architectural dimension. Barrios also directed the city’s Museo de Bellas Artes during the 1950s. His career thus brings together painting, monumental intervention and participation in the life and development of artistic institutions.
This profile brings together identity references for Armando Barrios and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
