Germaine Dawis was the professional name of Eugénie-Marie Gadiffet-Caillard, born in Paris in 1857. Trained by Arsène-Hippolyte Rivey and Adolphe Yvon, she exhibited at the Salon from 1877 and later became a pupil of Jean-Jacques Henner. Portraits, nudes and genre scenes formed her repertoire. Her relationship with Henner involved both sitting as his model and learning a pictorial approach. Discussing her Nymphe à la fleur, the Mulhouse museum highlights the red hair, sfumato and landscape background that connect the painting to his legacy. A member of the Société des artistes français, Dawis also maintained her own exhibition activity. Her work illustrates the transmission of a studio language through an individual engagement with the figure. She died in Nice in 1927.
