Charles Matton

Born : 1931Died : 2008Documented citizenships : France

Charles Matton (1931–2008) developed a practice spanning painting, sculpture, photography, illustration and cinema. He worked for magazines, including Esquire in New York, before making films such as La Pomme ou l’Histoire d’une histoire in 1966, L’Italien des roses in 1972 and Rembrandt in 1999.

During the 1980s, his “Boîtes” gave a distinctive form to this exchange between media. He constructed miniature interiors, painting walls, sculpting furniture and accessories, and placing photographed landscapes behind the windows. Carefully adjusted lighting turned these meticulously composed spaces into explorations of perception. Robert Delpire presented his work in “Séductions Utopiques” in 1983. His works are held by the Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris and the national museums of modern art in Tokyo and Kyoto.
