The artwork in detail

At the centre of a meadow in nuanced shades of green, a young peasant woman turns towards the viewer. Her ochre dress and dark kerchief form a vertical silhouette, while the pale sky opens up the background. Standing in grass dotted with flowers, she holds a work tool; the scene brings together human presence and rural landscape. The signature “Jules Breton”, legible at the lower left, is consistent with the name retained for the work, without in itself constituting proof of authenticity. Breton devoted a significant part of his painting to peasant life. In his rural scenes, the reality of work is often combined with an idealised representation of the figures, an approach also noted by the Walters Art Museum for a work in its collection. The contrast between the more carefully constructed passages of the figure and the meadow’s quick brushstrokes animates the surface. Greens, browns and ochres meet the bluish greys of the sky; a few touches of colour in the foreground draw the eye. The visible paint surface is marked by craquelure and localised alterations. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting is shown unframed. On the reverse, a textile reinforcement is visible near the upper right corner; the gallery owner notes a restoration, without specifying its date or nature. Her direct gaze suspends the work for a moment. The young woman remains present in the middle of the meadow, between figure and landscape.
