The artwork in detail

Beneath a wide-open sky, two sailboats cross almost motionless water. The nearer one, constructed through the opposition of ochre, rust and blue-grey sails, stands out against pale clouds; its vertical reflection silently prolongs the hull into the sheet of water. A few piles punctuate the low horizon and give the space its measure. The visible signature at lower right reads “L. Pagan”. Luigi Pagan, born and deceased in Chioggia, devoted a significant part of his painting to the landscapes and life of his lagoon city. This scene belongs to that world of ports, boats and Venetian light. The painting proceeds through thin layers and a material animated by small horizontal striations. The contours of the clouds and water readily merge, while the masts, rigging and silhouettes of the sails provide a firmer vertical framework. The blue-grey tones of the atmosphere are answered by the muted yellows and earthy reds of the boats. Executed in oil on panel, the work retains on the reverse the appearance of a rigid support, in accordance with the technical indications in the dossier. The sensitive brushwork, perceptible even in the calm areas of the water, makes the surface vibrate without breaking the sense of silence. A brown frame with a restrained profile, accompanied by a wide light textile mount, isolates the composition and emphasises its muted tonality. Its regular design allows the broad expanses of sky and water to breathe. Between overcast sky and luminous water, the sailboats seem less to recount a passage than to hold on to a suspended moment of calm.
