Atelier de forge

This wooden bas-relief unfolds a scene of forging with great narrative clarity. In the narrow space of the workshop, the gaze moves from one gesture to another: the piece is held, the hammer is poised to strike, the bellows keep the fire alive. The entire construction rests on this tension between the central action and the surrounding tools, beams, and masonry, which gives the scene an almost immersive character. The sculpture makes remarkable use of wood: the bold protrusions of the figures and utensils contrast with flatter backgrounds, so that depth seems to arise from the material itself. The slightly irregular brown patina accentuates the reliefs and highlights the edges of the tools, while the faces and hands concentrate the essence of expressiveness.
