The artwork in detail

This floral composition unfolds a dense, almost incandescent bouquet, whose volumes seem to float in a dark space. The light, pink, and red flowers emerge in layers of light, while golden stems and foliage draw a kind of wide rotation around them, as if the motif were set in motion in the shadow. The material, supple and slightly misty, softens the contours and gives the scene a dreamlike quality: the image is not that of a botanical inventory, but of an apparition. The clusters of fruits, the crumpled petals, and the large vegetal curves construct a very lively still life, almost musical, where color plays the main role. The white and gold frame enhances this impression of a gifted painting, a precious envelope for a work that rests on the contrast between black depth and luminous bursts. On the reverse, the salon label and handwritten marks indicate an old exhibition circulation, giving the work a concrete historical presence, without however fixing its original title. About the artist — Sergio Cecchi is documented by several sources as a painter linked to Geneva, active in a figurative and urban register, with views of streets, quays, and neighborhoods of Geneva regularly present in his corpus. The consulted notices place him between Venice and Geneva and confirm a pictorial practice sensitive to light, textures, and atmospheric effects. Even if the available sources here do not allow for a certain connection of this canvas to a titled ensemble, the work credibly fits into this universe of lyrical painting, attentive to the motif and its visual radiance.
