Robert Indermaur
Born in 1947.
Robert Indermaur is an artist whose practice brings together painting and sculpture and who is noted for mural interventions and other contributions to the public realm. His approach, grounded in autodidactic study, also encompasses humorous drawing (cartoons) and theatre-set design. Among his thematic concerns is the petit bourgeois in the affluent society, treated in a register oscillating between affectionate caricature and satire.
After obtaining his diploma from the Bündner Lehrerseminar in 1967, he travelled throughout Europe, Asia and Africa in the years following his studies. He subsequently worked as a primary-school teacher in St. Antönien, Passugg, Domat/Ems and Chur. In 1974, together with his partner and several friends, he founded the small theatre Klibühni Schnidrzunft in Chur, which they ran for ten years.
He settled in Almens in 1983 and works there; from 2004 onwards, he has also had a second studio in Paspels. Married since 1975, he is the father of three children.
Indermaur produces paintings and sculptures both for the exhibition context and for the public realm, creating mural works and sculptures made for public sites. He has also designed the sets for three theatre productions, thereby extending his artistic practice into the field of scenography. His cartoons add a humorous tone to a practice that, depending on the work, may tend towards satire.
The documented events include a presentation at the Forum Würth in Chur (2017/18), exhibitions at the Kunstkeller in Bern (2009, 2012, 2016), and a presentation at Galerie Hilt in Basel (2007). The press also reported on a major solo exhibition in Chur in 2017. He continues his work from Almens and, since 2004, also from a studio in Paspels.
