Raymond Buchs
Born in 1878.
Died in 1958.
Raymond Buchs (1878–1958) is presented in the sources as a Fribourg artist whose practice encompasses painting, drawing and printmaking.
He begins his professional training as a glazier in the Fribourg workshop of Kirsch et Fleckner. He subsequently attends classes taught by Ferdinand Hodler. He continues his training in Saxony and then in Dresden, where he meets the painter Max Pechstein.
After a period of study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, he returns to Fribourg.
Back in Fribourg, he works as a drawing teacher in primary schools.
His output, documented as comprising paintings, drawings and prints, is represented in the cantonal collections by works such as Le Jaun (1919, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Fribourg) and Bellegarde (1922, Musée gruérien, Bulle).
Critical and exhibition documentation includes, in particular, the exhibition catalogue of the Musée gruérien (1978) and the monograph by P. Rudaz (2001); the artist also appears in several collective catalogues related to Fribourg (1972, 2004).
The material brought together makes it possible to situate his training (glassmaking workshop, instruction, periods in Saxony and Paris), his artistic contacts and a number of works held locally, without claiming to provide an exhaustive chronology of his output.
