Karl Glaus
Born in 1925.
Died in 2013.
He completed a two-year course of study at the Zürcher Kunstgewerbeschule. A photograph held in the database of the Schweizerisches Sozialarchiv shows him painting outdoors in 1948.
The City of Zurich awarded him a grant, mentioned as support for his artistic practice. Among the works from this period, the painting entitled «Bauarbeiter» remained in the artist’s studio for years.
According to the Aargauer Kunsthaus, his marriage in 1949 compelled him to earn a living and brought about an abrupt halt to his artistic activity. After his death, his work first received increased attention when the Zurich gallery sam scherrer contemporary exhibited works from his corpus that were still accessible in 2014.
The Aargauer Kunsthaus further notes «Weitere Werke in der Sammlung», indicating the presence of other works associated with his name within a collection. The available documentation makes it possible to outline the profile of a painter trained in the applied arts, active before 1949—as illustrated by outdoor works—whose production subsequently receded from public view after his marriage, before attracting renewed attention following the presentation of his works in 2014.
