Fred Baumann

Born in 1947.

Fred Baumann is identified in specialised directories as an artist active in painting, sculpture and printmaking (SIKART data, identifier 4006119).

After an initial education completed with an apprenticeship as a graphic designer, he performed military service and subsequently undertook extended journeys to the Near East and India, documented stages in his training and development.

He then trained as a social pedagogue and worked from 1972 to 1979 as an educator and art teacher in a residential home for young people in Aarburg; this professional experience is attested by the available biography.

In 1979 he became an independent painter and sculptor, and during the same period his family moved to the “Bärgli” in Rohrbachgraben, according to the biographical notice consulted.

According to the sources, 1981 marked increased visibility: the artist identifies a first major exhibition at the Wolfsberggalerie in Zurich, and in the same year he was noticed by the art historian Dr Alfred Roth at an exhibition at Galerie Schlossberg.

In terms of his production, Baumann works on several supports; a precise technical reference is provided by the painting Mohnwiese – Diptychon (2005), identified as his first significant use of a particular red acrylic colour known as “Ferrari-Rot”.

The biography also records, for 2016, a body of work comprising approximately 2,200 paintings and 150 sculptures, figures supplied by the artist or drawn from his documentary catalogue.

With regard to his commercial and exhibition activities, he opened a gallery in Venterol (Provence) in 2007 for the purpose of permanent exhibition. This activity was confirmed in 2008 under the name “Galerie Ombre et Lumière”.

In 2010 he took part in the Pro Infirmis project, a collaborative initiative bringing together artists and people with disabilities. According to the notice consulted, the project was presented in a travelling exhibition in Switzerland.

A monograph published in 2003, entitled Fred Baumann, Licht und Schatten - oder hundert Jahre zu spät, is listed in the artist’s directory and constitutes an explicitly cited source in the available notices.

For reference and bibliographic guidance, readers are directed to the SIKART notice (identifier 4006119) and the 2003 monograph; the biographical documentation also contains quantitative inventories supplied by the artist, facilitating further verification.

This notice summarises the biographical and career information retained from the sources consulted—birth in 1947, practices in painting, sculpture and printmaking, and the transition to an independent artistic practice from 1979 onwards—without claiming to be exhaustive in documentary terms.
