François Furet
Born in 1842.
Died in 1919.
The Geneva painter and decorator François Furet (birth name; variant Francis Furet), active in the second half of the nineteenth century, is documented in contemporary notices as a landscape and animal painter. A Protestant resident of Geneva, he became a citizen of Geneva in 1869; he was the son of Claude, a French tailor, and a Genevan mother.
He apprenticed as an enameller under Louis-Samuel Rosselet and then attended painting classes with Barthélemy Menn. Described as Menn’s “favourite pupil,” he belonged to the group known as the ‘Emules’, alongside Auguste Baud-Bovy, Edmond Ravel, Hugues Bovy and Léon Gaud. He frequented the Bovy phalanstery at Gruyères, where he met Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and shared a studio with Auguste Baud-Bovy; among other émigrés mentioned, this centre also brought together Gustave Courbet.
His first known exhibition took place in Geneva in 1861; he exhibited regularly in Geneva until 1898. His work included participation in large-scale decorations and projects: the decoration of the Grand Théâtre de Genève (1879), the Blümlisalp diorama (1886) and Baud-Bovy’s panorama (1891–1892). In official recognition, he was awarded a medal at the Paris Exposition universelle in 1889 and received the Légion d’honneur in 1896.
Contemporary notices describe him as a “good landscape and animal painter”, a formulation repeated in the reference works consulted. The documentation indicates a familial or marital connection with Cécile Balland, daughter of Jean-Pierre, a French merchant. For bibliography and identification, a notice by D.
Baud-Bovy (“Francis Furet”, Pages d’art, November 1921) and authority entries in the GND and VIAF may be noted. These elements—identity, training with Menn, membership in the circle of the ‘Emules’, and participation in public decorative projects—make it possible to place François Furet among the Geneva practitioners involved in the major decorative projects and landscape practices of the late nineteenth century.
