A portrait and genre painter, Firmin Massot holds a central place within the Geneva School from the late eighteenth century into the first half of the nineteenth century. His art answered the expectations of a cosmopolitan society of Genevan families, travellers and European patrons staying on the shores of Lake Geneva.
His training at Geneva’s drawing school gave him a firm command of draughtsmanship. His Italian journey of 1787-1788, his encounter with Jacques Sablet in Rome, and his interest in English portraiture broadened his artistic outlook. Massot consequently developed a precise and restrained language, alert to physiognomy, fabrics, attributes and the social presence of his sitters.
His studio at the foot of St Pierre Cathedral became a meeting place for patrons, pupils and fellow painters. Collaborations with Jacques-Laurent Agasse and Adam-Wolfgang Töpffer often brought together figure, landscape and animal in highly refined compositions; Massot also taught privately, notably Amélie Munier-Romilly and Nancy Mérienne.
Portraits of Madame de Staël, Madame Récamier, Empress Joséphine, and prominent Swiss and European families attest to the breadth of his clientele. Drawings and paintings held by the Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva reveal the delicacy and assurance of his portrait practice.
