Astrid Fitzgerald

Born in 1938.

Astrid Fitzgerald stands at the intersection of a European education and a long-standing American practice: born and trained in Switzerland, she has lived and worked in New York and the Hudson Valley since 1961 (f1). She designates some of her recent series under the title Cosmic Measures, which reflect an inquiry into underlying geometric principles, including in particular the proportions of the Golden Ratio (f12).

Her course of study combines training in Europe and New York: College St. Agnes in Fribourg (1955–1958), the Polytechnic School in London (1958–1959), the Art Students League of New York (1962–1963), followed by post-secondary studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology (1968–1969) and the Pratt Graphics Center (1972–1973) in New York (f4, f3).

Her work has been shown internationally—in Europe, Asia and New York—in solo, group and travelling exhibitions, with recent presentations recorded at LoRiver Gallery (Beacon, 2005), Galerie Raubach (St. Gallen, 2004), Marist College (Poughkeepsie, 2003) and Muroff-Kotler/SUNY Stone Ridge (2000) (f2, f13, f18). Listed exhibitions include Cosmic Measures at the Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery, SUNY Ulster (2000); a solo exhibition entitled Astrid Fitzgerald: Emergent Symmetries at the Art Nouveau Gallery in Miami (2015); a retrospective at Wired Gallery (High Falls, 2013); as well as presentations at Galerie Raubach (St. Gallen, 2001–2002) and Kunstgalerie Hyposwiss (Zurich, 1996) (f16, f7, f8, f9, f17). Her work is also held in public and corporate collections cited in the dossier, notably the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art (Dallas) and the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art (Ridgefield) (f14).

Fitzgerald has completed several site-specific commissions for companies—including Union Bank of Switzerland, IBM locations and UBS Securities in New York—and her installation Amish Quilts was selected by the Artcanal jury, Le Landeron, to represent the United States at expo02 (f10, f6, f11).

She is also the author of several published books, including An Artist's Book of Inspiration (1996), Being Consciousness Bliss (2002) and Winter Break (2008), and received the Juror's Award at NYU's 4th Annual Small Works Competition in 1980 (f5, f20).
