Andrea Giuseppe Corciulo
Born in 1972.
In his Beyond Gravity series, Andrea Giuseppe Corciulo creates staged “visual worlds” that appear to defy gravity. These images emerge from a delicate collage of paper and light, carefully arranged, illuminated, and then photographed in the studio. The ephemeral original of each installation is dismantled and destroyed immediately after the photograph is taken, leaving the photographs as traces.
Beyond Gravity is presented as a site-specific installation for Swissnex in Osaka as part of Expo 2025, and is listed as Swissnex Window #8 in the programme mentioned. The display unfolds across large semi-transparent panels, designed to be viewed from both inside and outside, while ten small works printed on white PVC are arranged indoors to echo and amplify the impact of the large-format prints.
The visual material of the work is primarily found: images of plants, animals, objects, and figures taken from old books are recomposed into new constellations in which fragments are reconstituted and meanings shift. This recomposition follows an internal dramaturgy that invokes memory, transformation, and dissolution, and explicitly incorporates scientific motifs—botany, gravity, geology—set alongside a formal reflection.
Corciulo’s practice is described as multimedia: painting, collage, site-specific installations, and music are among the modes of expression mentioned in his profile. The presentation text claims an artistic practice extending over more than thirty years. Among the biographical details noted is that he was the singer of the group Monoblond and that, in 2023, he released an album under the pseudonym CLAYEYE.
By transposing the logic of the studio outdoors, the exhibition places photographic images and architecture in tension: the installations of paper and light are translated into glazed panels and interior prints, offering layers of images that play with transparency and light, while the original deliberately remains perishable. To complete this overview, the dossier notes the presence of works in the spaces of the Festland agency and refers readers to the artist’s personal website for further information.
