Christian Gottlieb Steinlen, known as Théophile (1779–1847), was a painter and draughtsman from Stuttgart who settled in Vevey. He taught drawing at the town’s college from 1832. His views of the Lake Geneva region, also circulated as prints, combine knowledge of place with landscape composition. Other engravers, including Bryner and Sperli, translated several of his designs.
Vevey’s historical museum emphasises the precision of his watercolours and their appeal to English travellers. His album for the 1833 Fête des Vignerons accompanies a collective spectacle. The copy presented by the Swiss National Library depicts seasonal labour, crafts and the figures of Ceres and Bacchus. His topographical gaze thus extends into an ordered representation of local activities and rituals, joining everyday life to festive imagery.
This profile brings together identity references for Christian Gottlieb Steinlen and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
